The program is characterized by rigorous academic
preparation and in-depth clinical experiences that
both apply new knowledge and prepare students
for the real demands of health care. A full-time,
27-month course of study, the M.H.S. program for
Physician Assistants is made up of three components. |

An intensive three-semester didactic phase covering basic medical and
clinical sciences. Diagnostic methodologies are emphasized in classroom,
laboratory and clinical settings.
Twelve months of intense clinical preparation emphasizing, but not limited
to, primary care. (Note that advancement to the clinical phase of this
program is contingent upon completion of the first yearÕs course work
with no less than a 3.00/4.00 grade point average.)
Clinical rotations during this phase include seven core rotations of six
weeks duration in the following areas: family practice/primary care, internal
medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, obstetrics/gynecology, general surgery
and emergency medicine. In addition, there are two, four-week electives
where students may choose to gain additional experience in any of the
aforementioned areas or in sub-specialty areas such as occupational medicine,
infectious disease, cardiology, orthopedics, cardiothoracic surgery,
neurosurgery, trauma, surgical ICU and the neonatal ICU. All rotations
require a minimum of 38 hours per week. In addition, some require night
call and/or weekend duty.
An advanced didactic phase is conducted in the summer session and
made up of courses in ethics, epidemiology, biostatistics, graduate seminar
and a comprehensive examination.
