The Center for Iranian Research and Analysis unequivocally condemns the
September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States. This indiscriminate
violence against civilians threatens the civilized world and all those
nation-states bent on promoting the rule of law, peace, order, justice, and
human dignity. The question remains whether the war alone will be enough to
combat terrorism. The campaign against global terrorism demands a hard look into
its causes and effects. Such a goal is achievable only if there is global and
genuine support for it. The key here is to emphasize multilateralism, that which
involves the United Nations operations, and one which is premised on a long-term
and lasting commitment not only to punish its perpetrators but also to cope with
the conditions giving rise to it. In the end, the ultimate goal of enhancing
peace and civility, as well as reducing human suffering, can be reached only
through political and diplomatic means. The international community can
ill-afford to overlook the complex, interlocking factors causing such heinous
crimes against humanity. The war against terrorism has become one of the
greatest challenges confronting us all at the dawn of the twentieth-first
century. In the struggle to rid the international society of terrorism, this
community of scholars, experts, and activists stand ready to serve, in its
capacity, the cause of eradicating terrorism through debate, communications, and
dialogue. Mahmood Monshipouri, Ph.D. Executive Director Center for Iranian Research and Analysis |
