Role of the Writing Specialist
Professional writers routinely seek advice from editors, writing coaches,
colleagues, and friends. Expert writers know that the process of
discussing their work with prospective readers helps them to clarify ideas and
use language more precisely. Law students in particular, as they make the
transition to their new discipline, can benefit from talking to a writing
specialist who is familiar with the discourse conventions of the law. In
our conferences, I will be able to work with you at each stage of the writing
process and address your individual problems and questions.
Your Legal Writing professor and I share the same goals. We want you to
be thoroughly prepared for the kind of rigorous scrutiny your writing will
encounter in law school and in legal practice. Throughout their careers,
lawyers are judged on the basis of their writing. Consequently, law
students who take an early interest in sharpening their writing skills will
benefit from the results for many years to come.
