UNIT 9 - Vestibular System and Postural Control
This unit will present the structure and function of the vestibular system and its fibrous interconnections to help
understand the postural the postural control mechanism.
Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this unit the student will be able to:
1. Identify each major structural component of the vestibular system with fibrous interconnections given a
variety of anatomical drawings.
2. Illustrate fibrous interconnections of the labyrinths with vestibular nuclei, cerebellum, and reticular and
efferent motor structures.
3. Describe in writing each major efferent tract directly involving the vestibular system and include its
functional significance.
4. Describe in writing the relationship between the vestibular system and the cerebellum in regard to
postural control.
