UNIT 7 - Cerebral Cortex

The cortex in the preceding unit has been discussed in terms of thalamic input.   Elaboration of this information, together with additional structural and functional considerations, will be presented in this unit in order that the therapist might gain a greater understanding of the cerebral cortex as the highest level of neural expression.

Educational Objectives:

Upon completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

1. List each specific and association area of the cerebral cortex (according to Brodmann).

2. Identify the location of each specific and association area (listed above) given a schematic diagram of the cerebral cortex.

3. Describe in writing, the functional significance of each area listed above.

4. Describe in writing, the functional layers of the cerebral cortex.

5. Describe in writing, the major functional differences between the dominant and non-dominant hemispheres.
