UNIT 5 - Afferent Pathways

This unit will present a description of the formation and course of major ascending fiber systems in the spinal cord.   It will also further emphasize the significance of receptors (Unit 4) in the central nervous system function.

Educational Objectives:

Upon completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

1. List each major afferent pathway in the spinal cord.

2. Describe in writing each major pathway as listed above to show formation and course.

3. Name the sensory modality mediated by each major afferent pathway in the spinal cord, including the receptors involved.

4. Describe in writing, the functional significance of each tract listed as it relates to C.N.S. function.

5. Given the level at which each pathway is interrupted, determine the area of the body where the sensory deficit will be found.
