MARKETING HISTORY JOINS 21ST CENTURY
At the urging of several of our leading participants, Marketing History now has a website. We can be reached at www.bus.msu.edu/marketinghistory. Initially, we expect to show the Call for Papers for the Ninth Conference, the Journal of Macromarketing style sheet (which is the official style sheet for conference papers) and, to add class to the whole production, a picture of Terry Witkowski receiving the Best Paper Award at the 1997 Kingston Conference. Over time, additional information will be added and revisions will be made. For example, we could put Donald Dixon's summary index of conference papers on this site and probably will. Our computer advisory people recommend very strongly against trying to publish a directory of participants and interested marketing historians because of the privacy issues involved. We will publish links to other useful electronic addresses.
But this is your own marketing history website. We need your information. The rules are very simple. We will only circulate scandalous, libelous and malicious information about the football teams at the University of Michigan, Ohio State and Notre Dame. Outside of that, we will not accept libelous or malicious data. Tell your fellow marketing historians what you are doing. Information about changes of address, promotions, prizes, publications, retirements, research projects, and other such events is very welcome. Authors' queries, or information, or research suggestions are always in order. Check the web pages frequently for updates. Send all information to Mrs. Renee Dixon, Department of Marketing & Supply Chain Management, N370 North Business Complex, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 48824-1122; phone: (517) 353-6381; fax: (517) 432-1112; e-mail: dixonr@pilot.msu.edu.
PACKAGING GROUPS WRAP UP SUPPORT FOR NINTH CONFERENCE
The Institute of Packaging Professionals and the Packaging Education Forum have pledged very generous support for the Ninth Conference which, as all
readers know, will be held in East Lansing May 13-16, 1999.
The Institute of Packaging Professionals is the oldest and largest individual membership organization in the world serving the field of packaging. With some 8,000 members, mostly from the United States and Canada, IoPP provides continuing education and professional development opportunities through conferences, seminars, and the activities of more than 40 chapters around the country. It is now the largest publisher of packaging titles as well as having just introduced a glossary of packaging terms in both print and CD-ROM versions. Membership encompasses individuals whose primary concerns represent all fields of packaging from food to electronics, from the field to the consumer, from engineering to distribution, and of course, from marketing to sales. The current organization resulted from a merger of two other independent organizations in 1989. For more information: IoPP, 481 Carlisle Dr., Herndon, VA 20170, or www.packinfo-world.org or www.iopp.org.
The Packaging Education Forum, originally established as the Packaging Foundation at Michigan State in the mid-1950s when efforts to create the current School of Packaging were underway, represents the packaging business interests in university level education. PEF has been involved in the establishment of every university packaging program operating in the United States today. It conducts an active liaison program, has provided grants for start-up expenses, and has funded student financial assistance grants. Today, it concentrates on providing ongoing liaisons among the schools and with the business community, promoting awareness of the career opportunities in packaging as a way of assisting the programs in attracting qualified students, and administering student aide programs including the support of post-graduate work at five of the universities. For more information, PEF, 481 Carlisle Drive, Herndon, VA 20170, (703) 318-8975.
NINTH CONFEREES WILL BE FAT CATS
Hellenic mythologists know that Clio, the goddess of history, liked to hang out with her friend, Diana the Huntress. Diana, the Huntress Twede, local arrangement chair for the Ninth Conference, has been hunting for very special meals for the conferees. Those who attended the meeting about six years ago remember a reception in the Dinosaur (Heritage) Hall at the University Museum. This time we will dine there. In spite of university catering's reputation for serving excellently aged beef, Diana tells us that dinosaur meat will not be on the menu. Union Catering Service will give participants an opportunity to pre-register for a choice of an entrée at the museum dinner. All dinners, as well as three breakfasts, two lunches, breaks, etc. are included in the conference early registration fee of $200, $160 for students.
Don't forget: to obtain best accommodations and rates, participants should make early room reservations at Kellogg Center, MSU's remodeled hotel and conference center. Telephone: (517) 432-4000 ext. 5121.
